Are we undervaluing real creativity in photography?

I’ve seen an AI trend going around this week where people are creating an 80s version of themselves. Beyond it being a convenient tool and giving a quick end result, is the instant gratification making us value genuine creativity less?

I recently had a great client who wanted to celebrate her birthday with an 80s themed shoot. We talked about the direction she wanted to take, why she wanted to do it and the aesthetic she was going for. We came up with the prop and outfit ideas together and I even surprised her with some extra props like 80s themed film posters and a radio.

The shoot took place in Ruthin here in North Wales, and it was such a good example of what I love about creative photography and quirky photography. The chosen themes were 80s weightlifting and Sarah Connor from the Terminator and I think we nailed it.

After the shoot, she told me she loved the creativity and support throughout the planning and shoot process. We lose that completely by relying on AI to create cheap and quick end results. As humans, we love experiences and being able to look back on them with fondness. You can’t do that with AI.
