How to Prepare for Your Photoshoot

There is no shame in being nervous before a photoshoot. Most people are. Having a camera pointed at you can feel strange at first, but the whole point of working with me is that we make this fun. You will settle in faster than you think, and you will probably end up booking another shoot before you have even seen the final gallery.

While you are waiting for shoot day to arrive, here are a few things that genuinely help.

Give yourself time to unwind

If you have access to a good massage therapist, book one. It is one of the easiest ways to calm your body before a shoot, especially if it is for something big like a wedding. If you are anywhere near Ruthin, Nuanjan is excellent. A relaxed body makes a relaxed face, and that shows in your photos far more than any pose ever will.

Get some proper sleep

This is not the night to stay out drinking until sunrise, unless you are specifically aiming for a chaotic, slightly feral, hungover photoshoot. I will not stop you, but you have been warned.

A calmer option is to wind down with a book, a hot chocolate, and whatever furry creature shares your home. Your future self will thank you.

Practice in the mirror if you want to

You do not need to do this, but some people find it helpful. If there is something you are self conscious about, or if you want to see how certain angles look, a few minutes in front of the mirror can give you a bit of confidence. I promise you, every part of you is photogenic, but if practicing helps you feel more prepared, go for it.

Choose clothes that feel like you

This is not the time to squeeze yourself into something that makes you miserable. Wear clothes that fit properly, move well, and feel like your personality rather than a costume. If you are constantly adjusting something, it will distract you and it will show. Comfort and confidence always look better than fashion‑for‑the‑sake‑of‑fashion.

Bring things that help you settle in

Some people like music. Some like a drink of water. Some like a jacket they can throw on between shots. Some like a friend for moral support. There is no rule here. If something helps you feel grounded, bring it.

Give yourself more time than you think you need

Rushing is the enemy of good photos. Arrive early, take a breath, and let yourself settle into the space. When you are not flustered, everything flows better.

Trust that you do not need to know what to do

You do not need to pose yourself. You do not need to perform. You do not need to have a plan. That is my job. Your job is to show up as yourself, even if you feel a bit unsure at first. I will guide you through the whole thing in a way that feels natural rather than staged.

Remember that this is meant to be enjoyable

A photoshoot is not an exam. It is not a test of how photogenic you are. It is a chance to create something you will actually want to look back on. You will laugh, you will relax, and you will forget the camera is there more often than you expect.

If you follow even half of these tips, you will walk into your shoot feeling far more prepared than you think. And once we get going, the nerves fade quickly. You might even surprise yourself.
