Everybody talks about autumn photoshoots, but I think winter gets unfairly overlooked. Sure, you’ve lost the reds and orange leaves, but in return, you get mist rolling over lakes, cloud inversions in the mountains, snow, dramatic skies, and much more.
It’s also an excuse to wrap up in coats, scarves and boots, which gives you that warm cozy vibe in photos.
If you’re thinking about a winter couples shoot, here are 6 of my favourite locations:
Dolbadarn Castle: If you know me, this probably won’t come as a surprise, I love me a good castle. Built by one of the Welsh Princes, it sits surrounded by mountains and Llyn Padarn just next to it. If you’re lucky enough to get a misty morning, the whole place feels like it’s a legend embodied. It’s perfect for history lovers and fantasy lovers.
Llyn Brenig: Water stretching for miles, forest and heathland around the shores. Keep your eyes peeled and you might even see red squirrels, pine marten and deer.. It’s also normally very quiet in the winter. You don’t have to hike for miles to find a perfect spot here. On a still day, the water looks like you’re looking into a mirror.
Talacre Beach: Beaches aren’t just for summer. If you are prepared to brave the wind and leave looking like you’ve touched an electric fence, Talacre in winter (or any time really) is brilliant, with dramatic skies and the Point of Ayr Lighthouse giving you fantastic backdrops.
Castell Dinas Bran: The climb to the top can be a little character building, but the views are worth it. Perched above Llangollen, the ruins sit overlooking the valley below, and if you’re lucky you can even see a cloud inversion. Be warned, this is one for couples who don’t mind a bit of adventure and strenuous uphill climbs. You definitely earn your photos.
Clocaenog Forest: This forest is full of pines and everygreens, so you can still get your dose of woodland trees here throughout the winter. It’s one of the few places you can get that woodland feel without staring at a load of bare branches.
Llangollen Canal and Pontcysyllte Aqueduct: Think frosty mornings beside the canal with steam rising off the water. The aqueduct tends to get a lot of attention, but the quieter spots can be just as beautiful. You could even incorporate a guided canoe tour (I can run alongside you like a maniac). You won’t need hiking boots for this ones, it’s nice and flat, just bring a picnic to enjoy.
As much as I love recommending locations, my favourite shoots are the ones where the place means something to you.
Where you had your first date
Where you walk your dog every Sunday
Maybe somewhere you re-visit together every year.
Or maybe you just like castles
It’s about finding somewhere that feels right for you, and that’s something we’ll chat about before the shoot, so you don’t have to worry about that.
