Why You Shouldn’t Care What Anyone But Yourself Wants For Your Wedding
It’s your wedding, so you get to choose. You’re not trying to please anyone else. If you want a dinosaur theme, have a dinosaur theme. If you want a disco theme, fill the place with disco balls until the venue manager starts sweating. No one else will remember the day as clearly as you will, so why on earth would you shape it around someone else’s taste.
Most guests remember three things: the food, the weather, and whether they had a good laugh. They don’t remember your centrepieces or whether your dress was “bridal enough”. So why bother shaping your day around their opinions.People love to give opinions about weddings. They can’t help themselves. Colours, dresses, food, music, timings, guest lists, seating plans, whether Auntie Whoever should be invited even though you’ve never actually met her. None of it matters. If it doesn’t feel like you, don’t do it.
Tradition is only tradition because someone did it once and everyone copied them. You don’t have to follow any of it. If you want to skip speeches, skip them. If you want to walk down the aisle together, do it. If you want to have your dog as the ring bearer, do that too (so adorable).
If you’re wearing something you hate or doing something you didn’t want, it will show, your photos will look stiff. If you’re doing exactly what you want, you’ll look like yourself; relaxed, happy, glowing, and not pretending to be something you’re not.
Your wedding should look like your personality exploded in the best possible way. If you want to walk down the aisle in black, do it. If you want a medieval feast, do it. If you want to get married on a cliff, in a forest, in a pub, in your garden, or underwater, do it. The only rule is that you should feel like yourself.
Everyone else will survive.
